First, you need to report this found dog to your county’s animal services. By law, this dog is not yours to do with as you feel is best for him. He is someone else’s and, who knows… his owner may be devastated right now that their dog is lost!
Second, you may need to complete a “found dog” report with the county’s animal shelter. Most animal shelters will not require that you leave the dog with them… but you do have to file the report. The shelter will let you know how many days need to pass (usually 5) to allow the dog’s owner to claim the dog.
Third, if the required number of days pass and the owner never claims the dog, then the dog is yours to do with as you see fit. If you choose to surrender the dog to a rescue group, please visit our Courtesy Post page as we are more than happy to help!
